The Glasgow duo Protection drop a fresh new single ‘Thirst Shrine’ ahead of their upcoming EP.

On the grounds of Indie Pop, CHVRCHES honestly dominate in almost every sense of the genre, in my own opinion. The trio from Glasgow’s 80s-inspired flavor of Synth-pop captivated audiences from the moment their debut record dropped in 2013. Since then, CHVRCHES proceeded to conquer the Indie Pop world all across the globe with similarly influenced Synth-pop albums. Recently last year, CHVRCHES’ Iain Cook and well-respected Glasgow musician/producer Scott Paterson started working on this new side project, where they already have plenty of new music promised for the coming months.

Cook agreed to it and, soon after, Protection was announced and in early 2023, when they released their acclaimed debut EP ‘SEEDS‘. Now the duo announce their next EP, ‘SEEDS II‘, and dropped the lead single ‘Thirst Shrine‘. Breathy, chiming bells and a muted drum beat start the song off before the beat becomes more pronounced later on. Bright, twinkling keys and a minimal, yet consistent bass groove proceed to flood the track, followed by the beat shuffling. Lastly, vocals present themselves on the track and, while they only say a single line, pitch-shifting keeps them quite interesting.

Protection may be just starting off and Cook currently continues to put his focus into CHVRCHES, whilst Scott toured as a session musician for a wide variety of bands through the 2010s and has been producing and writing for other artists in his Glasgow-based studio, Sleepwalk. But as a promising fledgling project, they can surely develop their style and become another creative outlet for their music.
