English producer L’Étranger releases a new 4-track EP meant to pay homage to the dancey, Disco-infused treasure that is French House.

Irony can be quite a funny thing, like how L’Étranger makes expertly well-crafted French House music, despite being an Englishman. However, that didn’t affect his career in the slightest, as he’s been a critically and commercially acclaimed DJ since 2011. That year, L’Étranger’s free track “Touch” made it to the top 10 on the popular chart of the Hype Machine. From that point on, L’Étranger continued to build up his name and power in French House and Nu Disco scenes.

Recently, L’Étranger released his latest EP, ‘For The Floor‘, containing 4 tracks that certainly live up to the EP’s title. ‘Hi‘ starts off the EP with an energetic beat that adds layers to itself before the track beefs itself up. Some synths almost feel like they’re blended with pitch-shifted vocals, which are complemented with a rather funky bassline on top. ‘Sagittarius‘ begins with four-on-the-floor beats, followed by plucky, guitar-like synths, subtle vocals, and melodies that appear reminiscent of Daft Punk.

FFalx‘ proceeds to follow the previous track and falls more in line with the Nu Disco side of L’Étranger’s music. Most of that comes from the Disco-inspired synths which also fall in pace with the beat in places, interestingly enough. Lastly, ‘Let Go‘, the lead single, closes out the EP and, in my opinion, feels the most like Daft Punk. The track starts with percussion that feels like tapping on wooden blocks and a simple, straightforward, easy bassline as well. A very spacey vibe washes over the track, further supporting the Daft Punk comparisons, and old-school DJ scratches appear too.

L’Étranger really studied the makings of great French House music and applied it to his own fantastic EP expertly well. Maybe ironycan be a good thing, as it can lead to some of the most surprising results.
