Richard David James, better known as Aphex Twin, has launched a brand-new augmented reality app that pairs with his recent EP release ‘Blackbox Life Recorder 21f / in a room7 F760.’ This EP, which comprises four tracks, arrived on July 28 via Warp Records, marking the artist’s return after a five-year gap.

Aphex Twin made an exciting move on August 17 by releasing an AR app dubbed ‘YXBoZXh0d2lu,’ a coded representation that unravels as ‘aphextwin’ when subjected to Base64 binary-to-text translation.

Developed by the Tokyo-centered spatial internet studio KALKUL, with contributions from visual artist Weirdcore and backing from the artist’s label, the application offers an assortment of augmented reality landscapes harmonized with the audio backdrop of Aphex Twin’s initial music undertaking after a five-year hiatus.

Aphex Twin created an app that comes to life when you point your phone camera at the EP’s packaging. The front cover, vinyl label, and inner sleeves show different 3D things. You can play games and even make a cube from the EP cover come to life.

Aphex Twin gave a hint about the app at his shows in June, where people could enter cube sculptures to learn about the record. They also shared a special version of the EP’s main song (‘Blackbox Life Recorder 20 Ambient 760’) using a secret code at Sonar Festival.

Aphex Twin will be at three festivals this month, starting with London’s Field Day on August 19, followed by Lisbon’s Kalorama Festival and Bristol’s Forwards Festival.
