On September 14th, TikTok and Billboard introduced the groundbreaking TikTok Billboard Top 50 Chart, a weekly ranking showcasing the most popular tracks on TikTok.

This feature relies on “creations, video views, and user engagement” to determine rankings and represents the first music chart dedicated to measuring music’s popularity on TikTok. Presently, it is exclusively available to TikTok users in the United States and on Billboard.

Leading the inaugural chart for this week is “Wassup Gwayy” by Famous Sally and YB. Notable entries in the chart include “SkeeYee” by Sexxy Red in the second position, Doja Cat’s “Paint The Town Red” at number three, and “Epiphany (I’m Leaving)” by Chrisette Michele in fourth place.

Ole Obermann, TikTok’s Global Head of Music Business Development, emphasizes the platform’s pivotal role in music discovery and promotion. The TikTok Billboard Top 50 Chart underscores TikTok’s influence within the modern music industry and provides a dedicated platform for emerging artists like Bailey Zimmerman and PinkPantheress.

Billboard President Mike Van expressed their commitment to evolving charts and understanding how fans connect deeply with music and artists. He acknowledged TikTok’s substantial impact on music discovery, its role in shaping popular culture, and highlighted the chart as a valuable industry tool. Furthermore, he noted that this collaboration provides brands a fresh avenue to engage with music fans on a larger scale, emphasizing the significance of achieving the number one position on the Billboard chart as the pinnacle of success.

This chart serves as a testament to TikTok’s influence in today’s music industry. Over the past year, TikTok has played a significant role in revitalizing older songs, such as Kate Bush’s 1985 hit “Running Up That Hill,” which gained renewed popularity through its use on the platform and its appearance on the show “Stranger Things.”
