Sound the alarms and ring the bells! It’s our first major announcement of 2025!
Nintendo started this year with one hell of a bang. Unveiling their latest design for their newest console, the Nintendo Switch 2, fans have been clamoring for its release.
Now, there is a chance that fans will finally be getting their first look at this much-awaited, and much-anticipated console of the new year.
Recently, on January 16th, Nintendo finally unveiled and released their ‘first look’ trailer for the new Nintendo Switch 2. This trailer has given fans more of an idea of what to look for in this latest console. The trailer shows that the design is largely based on the newer version of the Nintendo Switch OLED.
New Features: A Bigger Screen and Sleeker Controllers
This means a larger screen and more enhanced visuals. This screen will come as standard on the Switch 2. With a much bigger screen and Switch controllers added on, it seems like a whole new experience.
How the Switch controllers are attached to the Switch has changed, too. Instead of docking the controllers onto the Switch by sliding them into place, it appears as though the Switch 2 has opted for a different method. This newest design requires players to plug in the controllers instead.

Perhaps plugging into the Switch 2 gives players a better connection. This better connection means that controller drift and miscommunication will be things of the past.
In addition to this, the controllers have a better and sleeker design. Their design appears more ergonomically focused than the previous controllers, with much smoother edges and fewer sharp lines.
This appears to be a console based on player experience and comfort of play, not a console trying to beat out the competition with better graphics and enhanced gameplay.
Backward Compatibility and Release Date
A major element of this console is that old Nintendo Switch games will be backward compatible with this latest console. This is a major bonus for many Nintendo fans, as having the ability to play older titles on their newest console is always a big plus. After all, it was one of the best-selling points of the early Xbox One.
However, there is an asterisk beside it. This asterisk notes that not every game will be backward compatible, although they may release more information surrounding this at a later date.
The trailer only gives us a visual glimpse of what this new console will offer players. There is little known about its technical capabilities or the graphics chip Nintendo has opted to use. However, many fans online have been constantly theorizing about what the new Nintendo Switch 2 console will be like, as well as hoping the Switch 2 will fix some flaws from the previous console.

After all, the trailer suggests that Nintendo has focused on improving its previous design. This release is less about creating an entirely new console. It seems that a handheld console is primarily what they want to achieve.
Rumors about the release of the Nintendo Switch 2 have circulated since the start of this year. However, it is unlikely that fans will see its release any earlier than March 2025. Nintendo addressed these rumors earlier this year, making it clear that the console will not be released during this financial year (ending around March 2025).
So, it is possible that around summer 2025, fans may finally have the new Nintendo Switch 2 console in their hands. Will it improve on the previous model? Only time will tell. So far, the trailer has shown us a promising start for this newest console—perhaps also a more optimistic start for the gaming community as well.
