On January 13, Bandcamp announced that it will ban music that is fully or substantially generated using artificial intelligence from its platform.
In a statement, the American online music distribution platform emphasized the importance of human creativity, saying, “We believe that the human connection found through music is a vital part of our society and culture, and that music is much more than a product to be consumed.”

Bandcamp said the new policy is designed to give artists confidence to keep creating music while allowing fans to trust the content they discover on the platform. Under the updated guidelines, music or audio that is generated wholly or in significant part by AI tools will not be permitted.
The platform also clarified that any use of AI to impersonate other artists or replicate specific styles is strictly prohibited, aligning with its existing policies on impersonation and intellectual property infringement.
Bandcamp users will also be able to report content they believe relies heavily on generative AI. The platform added, “If you encounter music or audio that appears to be made entirely or with heavy reliance on generative AI, please use our reporting tools to flag the content for review by our team.”
“With this policy, we’re putting human creativity first,” the company stated, adding that updates may follow as generative AI continues to evolve.
