British DJ and producer Mike Bentley is set to release his first ten-track album, Stand or Fall, next month, October 9, via his own label Critical Elements. Today, we are premiering “The Old Lion,” offering an exclusive first listen below.
With over 25 years of experience as a DJ and producer, Mike Bentley has released music on labels including dublucid, Affiliate, Techenie, and Prognosis. He has also been running Critical Elements since 2023, with more than 43 releases to its name.
Describing the album as a project that allowed him to showcase the different styles he loves to produce and listen to, Bentley says it took eight months to complete and has already received support from artists including Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Muir.
“The Old Lion” opens with a soft, punchy kick drum, delayed percussion, crisp claps, and hats, while sweeping chords establish an atmospheric foundation. A deep, moving sub-bassline gradually enters alongside processed vocal elements and melodic motifs, with atmospheric synth textures adding further depth as the track develops.
Speaking about the single, Bentley explains, “The Old Lion was really about setting the groove,” adding that he road-tested an early version during a warm-up set in London and immediately knew it belonged on the album.
