Martin Buttrich is renowned for being equally at ease in front of a virtual drum kit as he is behind a mixing desk. Outstanding releases on prestigious labels like Planet E, Four: Twenty, Cocoon, Poker Flat, Nervous, and Desolat have been produced as a result of this technical prowess and curiosity with music in all its forms. Buttrich has spent the previous few years totally focused on his own productions after recently retiring from DJing.

From his early clubs in Berlin and Hannover to his infamous work with Timo Maas at Peppermint Jam Distribution to his formative years in New York working with Loco Dice, Buttrich has amassed a wide range of musical influences over the years that have helped to shape his groove into one that is instantly recognizable for the discriminating listener. Light Vessel Automatic is a collage that vividly combines these musical recollections with a jazzy and chillout sway that has always been a passion of his but has been somewhat overshadowed by his success as a dance floor entertainer across the world, “I’m definitely not letting go of dance music, but over the last few years it just didn’t feel right releasing big bangers out there,” says Buttrich.

Buttrich has achieved success for reasons other than the catchiness of his tunes or the inventive ways he weaves beats into his songs. Even the most careful sound engineers respect him for his prowess with a sonic scalpel and his arcane ability to navigate the gamut of audible (and inaudible) frequencies. For Light Vessel Automatic, Buttrich isn’t hesitant to mix bizarre synth dings, reggae bounces, or old-school club sounds with somber piano melodies and epic strings.
