Ireland-born, Mexico-based producer and DJ Boom Merchant shares his latest double-track release, Bolivia, out now on Berlin’s Black Square Recordings. Originally released on April 25, the EP continues his strong momentum in 2025.

With a slew of releases under his belt, Bolivia marks Boom Merchant’s fifth release this year alone. Describing his sound as “High-energy electronic music with chunk, funk, nostalgia and futurism in equal measure,” he’s carved out a distinct presence in the techno scene.

The double release kicks off with the title track. Its tempting looped groove, shuffling hi-hats, and busy FX slowly build into a grinding bassline and hypnotic drum patterns sequenced into swirling rhythms. It doesn’t rely on many elements, but it’s undeniably captivating.

“‘Bolivia’ was made while I was relocating and didn’t have a studio space to make music. It was created with an MPC, a set of headphones, and a nice view,” Boom Merchant shares.

“Nanaman” is the more melodic of the two, with high-pitched vocals, a banging kick drum, and lush pads. Both tracks stand strong on their own, but our favorite is “Nanaman”. It just hits differently—and that breakdown? We can’t get enough of this masterpiece.

“‘Nanaman’ was made during a few sessions in December last year, and during that month I played my first gigs in Mexico; in Chihuahua, Parral, Ojo de Agua, and then Mexico City. There were a fair few adventures in the desert and some crazy stories, and I guess that’s where the energy and the optimism came from, although there is a hint of melancholy in those vocals and chords too,” he shares.

Catch Boom Merchant live this Saturday at La Esquina Club in Tlatelolco, and next Saturday (May 17) at Club Reforma in Mexico City, where he’ll play alongside Iluna.
