Irish-born, Mexico-based producer Boom Merchant dropped his latest techno single, “The Question,” last Friday (Mar. 7). Released on his imprint, Tribal Pulse, the track brings high-energy techno to the forefront. Alongside the original, Japanese artist Homma Honganji provides a chunky remix, adding more groove to the mix.

Boom Merchant‘s love for high-energy dance music began in his teens, evolving into a curiosity about how his favorite tracks were made. Once he started earning from gigs, he invested in synths and samplers, refining his sound and giving him the tools to fully pursue his passion.

“The Question” is a prime example of those early influences, featuring a punchy kick drum, shuffling hats, a tribal drum groove, and filtered synths.

“A tribal drum groove was something I planned to have in the mix that day, but I wanted to make something that was quite sparse and spacious while retaining the drive and energy that’s characteristic of my tracks and sets,” Boom Merchant explains.

Homma Honganji’s remix gives the track a chunked-up feel with an added focus on the bassline, using sequenced percussion to streamline the groove.

“Homma has been a key player in hardgroove music for as long as I can remember. He’s remixed a few of my tracks before, and the results are usually outstanding,” Boom Merchant shares.

This weekend, Boom Merchant will have three exciting gigs: starting at Vinylbox in Mexico City on Friday (Mar. 14), then performing at the Phenomenal 10th birthday party, also in Mexico City, on Saturday (Mar. 15), and finally wrapping up in Querétaro on Sunday (Mar. 16).

He’ll also be heading to Tokyo and Bogota, with more dates to be announced in Mexico.

Looking ahead to his release schedule, he says, “I’ve got EPs ready to be released on some cracking labels in March, April, May and June. It’s been a crazy journey in the studio over the past few months involving new instruments and new techniques. The results have been generating huge reactions in my sets, so it’ll be nice to get the tracks from this period out so everybody can have a listen.”
