Sascha Funke, a German DJ, and producer, delivers a new EP via the venerable Kompakt label. Treets is Funke’s monumental return to Kompakt since his Zug um Zug two-tracker in 2014, sharing five tracks that straddle eccentric house and techno.
In the title track, an alien-like vocal burbles in between an acid bassline and scratchy percussion, creating a strange, tripped-out mood. It offers a tantalizing peek into Funke’s bizarre underworld. Similar to E Plus, is wonky-out, but this time the feeling is sinister. A strong offering with lots of energy, Funke combines a symphonic vocal with bleepy pads and his trademark acid-drenched melody.
On Alles Paletti, a 2-step drum rhythm, a series of vibrant claps, a solid bassline, and ethereal synth notes combine to create a cheery soundtrack. It’s the kind of fairytale house that only Funke can create. Haus More, chugging percussion weave in and out of a shaky rhythm. The Other Version sounds futuristic as Funke embraces electro to the fullest. Returning extraterrestrial vocals are mixed with thudding drumming and shrill sound effects, which quicken the tempo. A quirky conclusion to a quirky EP.
