Recent Spotify updates aim to combat fake streams while offering innovative features to help artists promote their work effectively.

Spotify has intensified its efforts to remove fake stream numbers from public metrics. As of this month, any streams generated through artificial means will no longer be reflected in the publicly visible stats like monthly listener counts or stream totals. However, artists using Spotify for Artists will still see the counterfeit streams in their private analytics.

While this might initially seem puzzling, Spotify plans to make the transition smoother by adding explainer banners within the Spotify for Artists platform. These banners will help artists understand how their data is presented and how fake streams are filtered out for public-facing numbers.

Aside this new tool, Spotify for Artists has introduced a comprehensive checklist to help artists and their teams stay organized before releasing new music. Available exclusively on the desktop version, the checklist includes key promotional actions:

  • Adding a Canvas: Create looping visuals for tracks to enhance the listening experience.
  • Pitching: Submit songs to Spotify’s editorial team for playlist consideration.
  • Scheduling a Marquee: Plan paid promotional campaigns to reach a broader audience.
  • Considering Discovery Mode: Opt into programs to improve algorithmic recommendations.
  • Booking a Showcase: Arrange live performances to complement the release.
