Gregor Dodson, Director of Product Management, Explores the Motivation Behind Introducing ‘Samples’ as the Music Streaming App’s Latest Video Feature.

In recent times, multiple well-known online platforms have tried to recreate TikTok‘s distinctive vertical video layout. The newest addition to this trend is YouTube Music. As of today, the platform reveals Samples a vertical video stream designed to let users quickly preview and discover new music with just a single tap.

Prior to this, YouTube Music users had the option to switch between video and audio-only renditions of songs. The concept behind Samples involves incorporating algorithmically chosen video snippets to broaden listeners’ musical interests, all the while staying within the realm of their preferred choices. Similarly, earlier this year, competing music application Spotify began focusing on video content as a component of its music exploration journey.

Gregor Dodson says,

“Internally, we’ve talked for a long time about this, before TikTok even came on the scene. How can we better utilize our video corpus to allow you to very quickly tune into a vibe?”

The app already makes different playlists that match how you like to listen to music. One of them, called Super mix, brings songs and singers you like from all the music you listen to. There’s also a playlist called Discover that tries to show you new things you might like based on what you’ve listened to before.

You can get the music app on its own, or you can get it together with YouTube Premium, which lets you watch YouTube without ads. Spotify, which is the biggest music streaming service, said that having more young listeners is a big reason why it’s still the most popular app.
