The London-based DJ hopes to create a space for females/non-binary people to learn turntablism.

MADDØG, a London-based international DJ, Music Producer, and sound engineer who has shared lineups with artists such as Kesha, Betty Who, Big Freedia, Girl Talk, and Matt & Kim, is hosting the first-ever “Vinyl Bitch” open decks event Monday, November 27th at London’s Dalston Superstore. The event aims to create a safe place for women to learn or practice the art of turntablism.

Vinyl Bitch, which was founded by MADDØG, has a mission to create a vibrant, feminist, and inclusive space. Thus, the open deck event aims to inspire, showcase, and elevate the art of turntablism, which historically has favored cisgender men.

“I wanted to invest in cultivating a space where femme and nonbinary turntablists and vinyl enthusiasts could come together and bond over the art of turntablism and the craft,” said MADDØG. “I think it’s important to understand the hardware of the turntable. I feel like this knowledge seems way more complicated than it needs to be and the majority of this teaching is done by men. There is a clear lack of representation and safe knowledge-sharing spaces on the subject.”

Vinyl Bitch was created after MADDØG noticed herself being the only woman in lineups and wished to no longer feel like an exception to an unwritten rule. Furthermore, when speaking with others about the craft, she often heard people assume tribalism was hard or impossible to learn. She personally understands. It was this false belief that kept her from trying turntablism years ago.  Thus, MADDØG hopes that by the end of the event, attendees feel more confident in their skills and know that they indeed, can learn turntablism.

Attendees are welcome to bring their favorite vinyl to use. However, there will also be vinyl on site for open use as well. Furthermore, tutorials will be offered at the beginning of the event and all skill levels are encouraged to join.

The open deck is free entry and will start at 7 p.m. for sign-up sets. After 10 p.m.,  it will be free for all sets. To learn more about the event, you can visit the event page here
